Five Tricks to Clean Your Bathroom the Natural Way

shutterstock_209404249Aside from the kitchen, your home’s bathroom is perhaps one of the rooms in your house most prone to becoming dirty just because of how frequently it’s used. Cleaning it isn’t always straightforward either. It, most likely, has a number of different surfaces that need cleaning, including metal, ceramic, glass, wood,  and plastic.

In the interest of keeping yourself and your family safe and healthy, you might strive to use the least abrasive products that also get the job done fast and efficiently. If you are looking for a healthy way to clean your house, then here are some natural cleaning tips perfect for cleaning any number of different surfaces in your home:

  • Glass Surfaces, Like Mirrors and Windows

When it comes to cleaning glass surfaces like windows or mirrors, the best solution for doing so is a mix of 50% water to 50% vinegar, a chemical-free, safe cleaning solvent. You can place this mixture in a spray bottle and use a rag to wipe it off.

Although it might seem practical to use a paper towel instead, this option leaves a lot of fibers behind. While using a rag such as an old t-shirt is effective, microfiber cloths are the least apt to leave residual fibers behind on your newly cleaned surface.

  • Soap Scum in Showers and Tubs

As is the case with cleaning glass surfaces, a 50% water, 50% vinegar solution is effective for dealing with difficult soap scum buildup. For minor issues, a less aggressive baking soda and water paste mix will suffice. No matter what solution you use, pair it with a microfiber cloth, which has proven to be particularly effective at loosening built up residue.

  • Grout

One of the most effective ways to whiten or lighten grout is to apply a mixture of both baking soda and undiluted hydrogen peroxide to it. After letting it sit for a bit, scrub it with a toothbrush until it returns to its original color, or returns to the desired uniform appearance.

  • Toilets

It’s important to remember that toilets are constructed of porcelain and thus are susceptible to being scratched or stained if you’re not careful when choosing your cleaning products.

One of the best things you can do to keep your toilet bowl free from stains and odors is to apply some baking soda around the edges of the bowl, followed by a cup of undiluted white vinegar.

Another overlooked area that can also be a breeding ground for bathroom odors is under the hinges and bolts of the toilet seat. Removing these and cleaning around them every other week will greatly improve not only the cleanliness but also the odor of your bathroom.

  • Air Quality

As an alternative to odor neutralizing sprays and disinfectants that are full of toxic chemicals, you can use a mason jar topped with a lid with holes poked in it for consistent odor control. Inside the jar, you can place coffee grounds, baking soda, or white vinegar. Then, set it in a corner for it to work its magic.

If you follow these simple steps, you’ll not only have a cleaner home but one that is safer for your family and pets as well.
