5 Bathroom Safety Tips for Babies and Kids

The bathroom can be a fun place to spend quality time. Adults and children find it delightful to do bathe and primp in the bathroom. This can make them dangerous places for children if proper care is not taken.

Precautionary measures must be put in place to prevent children from having unsupervised access to bathrooms. Children can sustain injuries when they enter bathrooms on their own without supervised access.

5 Bathroom Safety Tips to Keep Your Kids Safe & Sound

Here are five safety tips for babies and kids to prevent bathroom injuries:

1. Safeguard Your Bathroom Against Kids

Your bathtub, toilet seat and water heater must be safeguarded against your kids. The best way to do this is to always lock up the bathroom after each use. Babies and toddlers can drown in very little water inside bathtubs. So, they must be prevented from having unauthorized access to bathtubs and toilets.

If you have to leave your bathroom for an instant to answer the phone or grab a towel, always take the kids out of the bathtub first. Never leave young children unattended in the bathroom.

2. Install No-Slip Strips on The Bottom of Your Bathtub

Installing no-slip strips on the bottom of your bathtub will prevent infant and toddler slips and falls. Consider covering your water faucets with a cushioned cover to prevent injury if your kids bump against it.

Apart from installing no-slip strips inside your bathtub to prevent slips and falls, you should also lock up your toilet lid. Installing a toilet lid lock will prevent your kids from reaching into the toilet water.

3. Adjust Your Water Heater to Prevent Scalding

If you do not secure your bathroom against unauthorized access, your kids may enter and turn up the water heater to the point of scalding themselves. If you cannot lock up your bathroom, you must turn down the water heater so that the faucet water is no more than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Use your elbow to test the water’s temperature. Make sure it feels warm to the touch… not hot. When your kids are big enough to turn the faucets themselves, teach them to always turn on the cold water first.

4. Keep All Medicines and Cleansers Locked Away

All medicines must be stored in child-resistant containers with their safety caps screwed on at all times. Apart from medicines, cosmetics, toiletries and bathroom cleansers must be locked inside cabinets or placed outside the reach of kids.

Items such as shampoo, toothpaste and soaps, must be locked up in cabinets too since kids could consume them or choke on their packaging.

5. Unplug and Keep All Electrical Appliances Away from Children

Plugged-in electrical appliances can cause shocks and electrical injuries when mishandled in the near water, especially in the bathroom. For the safety of your babies and children, bathroom electrical appliances, such as hair dryers and electric razors, must be unplugged from wall sockets and locked up in wall cabinets.

It is best to use these appliances in a separate room since shocks and injuries could result when they fall into water during plugged-in use.
